If it takes half a second to process the audio on a movie you just delay the video right along with it. For movies, on the other hand, it just has to do the encode, so the latency is less of an issue and, anyway, easier to compensate for. On old enough hardware you might literally have dedicated hardware just for reencoding multichannel audio into Dolby Digital or DTS because the CPU actually can't do it fast enough.

In a game it's having to mix and encode everything on the fly, and there's not a lot of options out there for software that can do it fast enough. You can do that in software without a license basically because the software doesn't need to be as performant.

For pre-recorded media you usually want the optical out as your playback device and to have the player either re-encode or pass through the existing bitstream, depending on what type of audio is available. It's not as hard as it sounds, but you do need to check literally all of those points to make sure all of your ducks are in a row.Д®dit: If Re-encoding for games is supported, typically you need to set the 'speakers' output to 5.1, make it your primary sound device, and check some boxes to make it output an encoded version on the optical out. If any link in that chain is broken, you won't get discrete surround.

If it's a video file or a streaming site it depends on the source file, the program you're playing it with, the settings of the program, your Windows sound settings, your Realtek driver settings, and potentially on what codec packs you've got installed. I know at least Dolby's patents expired at some point in the last couple of years, but that doesn't mean they have to make their own implementation free, either, and since most people are using HDMI these days instead of optical, there's still not much in the way of an alternative. You need to be able to re-encode the sound in real time for that to work, and Dolby and DTS both want money for the encoder. What type of media are you trying to play? If it's a video game it flat out won't work without shelling out for a Dolby Digital Live/DTS Connect license, and that's if the hardware even supports it. Has anyone found a working driver for this? Or perhaps some kind of work around? I'm open to suggestions even if that suggestion is that this will never work and I should just purchase a sound card.Д«tw ARC is not an option here as my video ends up going to a projector that does not support ARC.

I'd prefer to not purchase a sound card, especially when I can clearly have it work, the drivers just wont let me set that as the default output. However I'm unable to set the default format to Dolby Digital with the standard drivers. Testing Dolby Digital in the Supported Formats tab results in actual 5.1 surround, with both my rear channels working as expected. I attempted one which did add said option to my dropdown list in Default Format but I was unable to get any audio to play out of the rear channels. I've been googling for the past couple hours and have seen some modded audio drivers that supposedly add DD live and enable it in windows sound control panel. I'm having trouble getting Realtek to output Dolby Digital. I currently have a Sonos 5.1 surround sound system hooked up to my PC via the optical out port on my motherboard (MSI MEG Z390 Ace).
